Coaching Success Stories:
Bob
Bob
is an art gallery owner of many years. He is well known in his
industry and has a special love for pottery. Because of his
expertise he was asked to speak at his industry’s annual
conference of 2,500 attendees. Bob had very little experience in
speaking with formal audiences and he had no experience speaking
to an audience of more than 25 people.
When Bob called and asked me to coach him on his speaking
skills, he was nervous and terrified. He had, however, accepted
the invitation to speak which showed great courage and
enthusiasm for learning new skills in presenting and speaking.
We began our coaching together by defining all of the factors
involved with speaking in a large venue (like an annual
conference) which include:
Location, size of the room, microphone, podium, technology
needs, projection screens, size of the stage, sound checks,
handouts, what to wear, what physical notes are needed,
conference contacts, practice times in the presentation
location, and what supplies to bring.
The details of getting ready to speak and present are as much a
part of the success of a presentation as the actual delivery
itself. In fact, many presentations have suffered because the
details were not attended to. Bob and I spent three 2- hour
sessions working the actual presentation. We discussed what he
loved to do, what his passions were, what pumped him up and what
he thought would be valuable for the audience to hear about the
subjects regarding their industry. We added a little humor
throughout the speech and off he went to deliver.
Was he nervous? Yes. Was he also excited about being prepared?
Yes. All of the terror was gone and it was replaced with a very
nice feeling of being prepared. He felt like an expert about to
deliver valuable and timely information with a humorous hint to
it.
