Your
ROADMAP(sm)
for
Coaching
1.
A
Note from Natalie Manor, CEO
The
dialog that this month's coaching
topic has produced is terrific.
People are sharing with me their
coaching success stories and their
horror stories. Success
stories are what we want to hear and
horror stories are what we want to
eliminate.
I think covering the basics of
hiring a coach is a good place to
start to help eliminate any more
horror stories. Here is what I
suggest and has been successful for
the clients I have coached and
executive team's/organizations that
have looked to bringing on a coach for
their work:
1. Experience - make
sure your coach has the
experience you need. That means
that if you are hiring an
executive coach, they need to
have some good business
experience so they understand
your needs and issues. ROI;
turnover; retention; coaching
your team; profitability;
productivity; career
transitions, sometimes within
the same organization;
succession; business strategies.
Your coach should know and have
successful experience in
coaching these issues.
Business can be complicated.
You need someone who can look at
the whole business landscape
with you.
2.
Speed and availability – you
need a coach who can work at the
speed of business now and is
easily available when you need
them. Most coaching takes place
via the phone. Some clients
want to be on IM with me. We do
lots of sharing of information
and building our coaching call
agendas via email. We use all
the forms of communication that
will serve us best and we use it
often during the week and during
the coaching engagement.

Leader is A Coach”

- if
you want to be a better leader
and coach yourself.
3. Technology
– your coach should be clearly
aware and cognizant of business
trends around technology and
have their technology reliable,
fast and up to date.
4. Chemistry
– you should have a good “gut”
feeling about who is coaching
with you. Chemistry is everything
when you are being told
something that is key for your
learning, but might not be easy
to hear. You need to be able to
trust the information and the
communication without
hesitation. Rapport and
chemistry with your coach produces that for you.
5. Course
of Action
- you need to develop a clear and detailed process
for the coaching engagement.
Your coach needs to be able to
outline a course of action with
you based on your conversations
together. You need defined
outcomes that can be measured
and that will produce
sustainable results for you.
I always begin my coaching
engagements with a leadership
and communication assessment
which I have found is key to
developing viable and measurable
outcomes for the coaching
engagement. The assessment I
provide can be taken on-line and
provides a snapshot of who you
are right now. It also provides
key behavioral elements of how
you are perceived as a leader
and communicator.
6.
References – please do not
engage a coach without checking
references. You will learn lots
from speaking to people who have
used a coach to support their
issues/success and, about
how the coaching worked for
them. A coach can explain all
day long the value of coaching,
but a reference can give you
first person stories of what and
why the coaching worked.
The coaching process I use is pretty
simple, but intensive. I want to
make sure that when I coach you, you
get the total value for your money,
and more importantly, the total
value for your time you spend in the
coaching process.
-
My coaching engagements are 6
months in length. There are no
exceptions unless you have
coached with me before and then
you can coach with me and the
other NMA coaches for as long or
as short a time as you feel
necessary. An initial coaching
engagement does not make sense
for less than 6 months because
we are coaching around changing
things and people need time to
learn, assimilate and then
practice the new changes and
behavior.
-
Weekly coaching calls of 50
minutes in duration. You have
unlimited access to me via email
and telephone, but you MUST keep
your weekly telephone call with
me or the coaches so we don’t
lose momentum in your coaching
work.
-
Weekly email journal which
serves as our coaching call
agenda. While most people do
not write a long detailed
journal, they do say that the
journal is one of the most
important aspects of the
coaching engagement. It helps
them to stay clear, write out
what is important to them and to
see their progress as the
coaching progresses.
-
Physical meetings as least twice
during the coaching engagement.
You can fly me in to your office
or we can meet somewhere that is
mutually convenient for the both
of us. I like to have a full
day with you each time, and I really would
like to see your “work”
environment. If you decide to
make our meetings at a spa in
Costa Rica, I will be eternally
grateful.
The basis of coaching is momentum,
measurable outcomes and trust in the
guidance and conversations. I have
seen miracles and I have seen
changes that people thought would be
impossible to make. Lots of times I
get the credit for these changes,
but it is you that does the work and
achieves your desired results.
A coach can be your silver bullet.
My coach has helped me grow at a
rate that my staff would have
thought impossible a year ago.
I and my staff of coaches would be
delighted to work with you and help
you create the life you want and to
help you design measurable and
sustainable outcomes and results.

Leverage Your Coaching Skills to
Achieve Greater Results
By David Liddell, COO
You would think achieving
effective results from a strategic plan
would be as simple as building your plan and
rolling it out to your organization for
execution. Unfortunately it is never that
simple for a variety of reasons. Is it a
good plan? Has the plan been articulated
well? Do your people believe in the plan?
Are your people willing and able to execute
on your plan?
These questions have always
been helpful to me when working with our
clients to get to the root cause of why they
are not achieving the results they desire
and need for sustainable success. More often
than many of you would expect, the fly in
the ointment is not the plan (proved one
exists), but rather the organizational
leaders’ ability to motivate and inspire
their people to do their best.
Leadership has many elements,
however, the one that is most relevant for
this discussion and the most powerful
driving force for motivating and inspiring
people is coaching.
SO, WHAT IS COACHING?
ü
Coaching
is about reaching your goals by enabling you
to focus and achieve results more quickly.
ü
Coaching
is a collaborative partnership, helping you
get to the source of your problems, to
discover permanent solutions and move
forward.
ü
Coaching
is a process which is action-oriented and
encourages you to do more than you would do
on your own.
ü
Coaching
is an investment you make in both yourself
and your organization.
A coach listens to you. A
coach will help clarify your values, goals,
and plans. A coach will use inquiry to
uncover your truth. A coach will tell you
the truth, and hold you accountable to the
steps you agree to take.
If you consider a bell curve,
the vast majority of an organization
consists of B players with much smaller
groups of A and C players. This is not a bad
situation, and in most cases very normal,
but ask yourself a question – What results
could I expect if I could coach many of B
players to become A players? The potential
exists within most people – it takes a
skilled leader to make it happen.
If you want to improve your
results and want to know how, give me a call
and I would be pleased to work with you to
outline the best approach.
Our new eBook with MP3 is a
great way to get started with
the concept of coaching.
It offers you the tips, techniques
and strategies you need when it comes to
coaching.
