Why am I so
nervous when it comes to speaking in
public? What are those nerves,
Natalie, that keep me from feeling
confident, clear and impactful when
I stand in front of a group of
people? What can I do about the
sweaty palms, the knocking knees and
the need to run really fast and hard
in the other direction?
I feel like
quoting the Home Depot tag line here
which is “You can do it and we can
help”.
Speaking to a
group of people, whether it is your
weekly staff meeting of 6 people or
an audience of 2,000 people,
requires a very interesting first
step. It is – who are you, and what
are your speaking and presenting
strengths? The
ROADMAP's
eBook
with MP3 can help:

I
think
knowing who you are and knowing
your strengths helps you know your
speaking potential. Not
everyone is a dynamic, motivational
rah rah speaker like Les Brown, Zig
Zigler or Bill Clinton.
One of the
best speakers I ever heard was an newly
employed engineer giving his
first speech to the
company’s Board of Directors annual
meeting. I was in attendance at the
BOD meeting because I was coaching
the CEO on her speaking skills and
this engineer was part of the
overall group that was providing
information for the meeting.
He was great!!
He was quiet,
reserved, clear, connected with the
audience and provided two PowerPoint
slides with his information. He was
brief, concise, had eye contact with
the audience and provided everyone
with a story about his dog as an ice
breaker. He was not in front of the
group for more than 10 minutes, yet
I remember even to this day some of
the information he provided, and I
am NOT a technical information
person. The engineer would probably
never be hired as a
motivational speaker to thousands of
people, however, I bet his
management invites him back to
present again and again.
The point
is you can be you and be an
influential speaker who provides
clear, concise and relevant content that
is memorable.
Once you know
your style of speaking,
whether it is quiet,
technical, interpersonal, humorous, or,
loud and arm waving, you
can begin to build on those
strengths.
Gandhi was one
of the most powerful speakers of the
20th century and he never
raised
his voice. Mother Theresa was small,
quiet and powerful as a speaker
and people listened.
Some questions
for you to think about as you get
ready for
your public speaking and
presentation:
-
Who am
I? Would
I be comfortable with
notes to read when I
present?
-
Would I like a lectern to
keep my notes and to stand
behind when I present?
-
Would I like to have a lapel
microphone when I speak so I
can move around?
-
Would I prefer to stand
during my speaking or sit
with a small group?
-
What is most important about
what I am presenting?
What are the three
most important points I need
to make when I present?
-
Who is my audience? What do
they need to know? How do
they learn best?
-
What is the length of my
presentation, based on the
information I need and want
to provide?
-
Should I provide handouts?
-
Should I use PowerPoint to
supplement my presentation?
Really
thinking about what you want to
present, who will be listening and
learning and what would be important
for the outcome of your presentation
will help you to create a really
interesting presentation. It will
also help you be less nervous.
Once you know
what is important to you, and your
audience; what you will be
presenting; why it is important and
what outcome you want; you will
begin to remove some of your
nervousness so you can really
deliver the message.
