Great news! A CEO and President that I
coached on his Presentation Skills for
his first annual stockholders meeting as
president and CEO was just rated number
3 our of 100 great places to work in
their state.
I wrote to him and asked him if I could
get residuals for being there at the
beginning of his amazing success? He
very nicely wrote back and said he would
buy me lunch. Who wouldn’t want a lunch
with person that created that kind of
success for his organization. I wonder
if lunch in Costa Rica would be
reasonable….?
Professional development and honing of
your leadership and communication skills
DEMANDS that you become an above average
presenter and speaker. The pressure is
on. For the natural speakers, this is
something we take in stride. For the
speakers who are afraid or less
confident, it is a pressure that feels
bigger than it really is.
There are many ways to speak well,
better, with influence and impact. And
I know you can do it well.
Many of the
basics
cannot and should not be ignored.
You need to
practice
to find out what kind of speaker you
are. You need to find out what is most
important to you and what
outcomes
would please you and the audience.
You need to look good.
A haircut and a manicure are the basics.
You must have pressed clothes, clean
clothes. Jewelry needs to match. If
you use a hanky, it needs to be clean
and crisp.
Shoes are important. Polished and/or
use a damp rag to spiff them up.
Your clothes do not have to be expensive
or elegant, however, they need to be
respectful and fit you. The gentlemen
need to be able to button their jackets
without them stretching awkwardly across
their belly.
Ladies need to be able to have their
blouses not bulge across their chest.
My mom use to call it “Sunday Best”. I
think the term is still appropriate for
most of us. Sunday best applied to me
because I would get up for Catholic Mass
and put on my best clothes. My mom
wanted me to look like I was cared for.
When you speak and present, even if it
is just your staff at the office,
you want
them to see what you want them to see.
I have a favorite speaking outfit. I’ve
worn it for 3-4 years. It is classic,
drapes well, is fluid when I walk during
my speaking. I feel confident when
I wear it. Usually, I just take it out
of my closet, iron it and off I go.
While looking through my clothes – I am
dropping some unwanted pounds – I laid
out some of my outfits on the bed to see
how they fit. Well, there was a big
sunbeam on the bed and my favorite
speaking outfit looked a bit worn. A
tiny stain on the corner of a shelve; a
couple of threads sticking out of the
side seams; the hem on one leg of the
pants needed to be stitched.
I was sooooooo pleased that I found
those things. First of all, it is still
a favorite outfit and only needed a bit
of help. I fixed the items, had it dry
cleaned and pressed and wore it for my
next speaking engagement. I even bought
some new jewelry to go with it and
update the look.
When you are standing in front of people
presenting, they naturally look you
over. Be sure to give them great
information and someone who looks fit
for the content they are hearing. Let
them feel absolutely confident that you
are the perfect person to be giving them
the information they are receiving.
September is a good time to switch out
your closet and change from summer to
fall and winter. Maybe it is time to
update some of your clothes so you can
be that ever so powerful and impactful
leader who communicates information and
content that is powerful and timely.
Can’t wait to see you and hear you!
