I have
a coach and he is terrific. Why would I
have a coach if I am an experienced and
successful coach?
I think
the biggest value of having a coach is
to help you determine the real from the
imagined; to help you figure out if what
you are doing is based on fact or your
own, sometimes very narrow, opinion.
Let me
give you an example of what I mean:
Based
on my experience of working with
eCommerce and business to business
technology, I believed that the approach
to being successful was going to be hard
and sticky. “Darn that technology" was
my attitude. Even though we have
tremendous technology vendors, I just
knew that the process was going to take
too much time, cost too much and put a
damper on the speed at which I wanted to
move through the process.
My
coach offered me a much different,
albeit more accurate perspective:
1.
My
opinion was keeping me from seeing
the value of the speed at which I
would be learning the process; the
speed at which was necessary for the
NMA staff to learn and embed the new
information and the aspect of taking
my new learning and helping me be
highly creative during the
development process.
2.
That
my negative approach to this new
process was “leftover” from a very
bad experience of installing our new
business server and connecting the
two NMA offices in 2006.
3.
That
the costs of learning this new
process was worth each dollar
because we had already calculated
the ROI and knew it was going to be
extremely profitable.
The
value of having a coach is tremendous
because I am able to listen, learn, be
supported and then change what needs to
be changed in my own approach.
I
appreciate the “real time” value of
coaching too because I don’t have to
wait to learn. I just call my fabulous
business coach and say “help”.
My
coach also has a coach. We understand
the value of the process, the certainty
of following that process and in the end
– no the value of coaching never ends –
we have what we need to be successful.
My
coaching clients tell me the very same
thing. They are highly successful
individuals who need support and
guidance in many areas. Sometimes it is
for an hour and sometimes it is for
months until they “get” the new
information and behavior embedded into
their lives.
I would
also like to point out that not everyone
is going to give you the feedback you
need, when you need it. Sometimes the
feedback you need is pretty direct. Not
many of us give off the impression that
we want to hear direct or difficult
information from our peers, co-workers,
family, spouses etc. Your coach will
always support your strengths and point
out your challenges because that is what
you want and need from them.
One of
my clients told me that our coaching
together was magic. I am not totally
sure what that means, but I do know that
when you experience the support of a
great coach, you no longer are alone,
confused, or lost. You also have
someone who is going to stop you in your
tracks and tell you when you are doing a
great job! You get the best of all
situations – help when you need it and
applause when you accomplish your
outcomes.
