Everyone I know is working on their end of the year goals. They are adjusting to see where they are and what they need to do in order to accomplish their goals.

While you are thinking through your goals, think through the people in your life and see if there is anyone you need to "work on". What I mean is, "Do you have anyone who needs you?":

• Get in touch with them
• Give them a big hug because you were kind of negative with them the last time you were together
• Make a phone call because it is really way past your turn to get in touch
• Send a card or note because it would make you feel really good and them too
• Stop making up stories about things that never really even happened
• Say you are sorry

The reason I ask, "Do you have anyone who needs you?" is because I have a dear friend whose mother died in her sleep last night. There was no indication of illness.

If that had happened to me, I would be really sad that I did not get to say goodbye.or make up for something that would have been special to clear up.

I hope this note helps you stop and take time with those most important to you in the world. Ever since I heard about my friend's mom, I've written two notes and made a phone call - all were overdue. I feel better. I also feel like the connections I made are something I wanted to do, not just need to do.

Today reminded me that life is short and that ultimately I get to choose how I live it. Here is a great quote the really says it all:

Every now and then you need to share a success story so people can "get" that they can be successful too.

Let me set the stage for you.

A beautiful, slim, healthy and articulate woman executive contacted me about coaching her through a new assignment. In fact, this would be the biggest and best paid project she had ever been offered and managed.

As I do with all my coaching clients, we did a leadership and communication assessment to get snapshot of where she is right now. The assessment gave us feedback on:

• Her talents and strengths
• How she communicates
• Her value to an organization and project
• What her ideal environment would be
• How she manages and motivates as a manager
• What behavior style she is and what that means
• What her success hierarchy is
• How her success hierarchy relates to how she operates at peak performance

The feedback from the assessment highlighted some areas that she needed to be aware of for this project. This is what it highlighted:

• Communication style in dealing with diverse and highly educated contractors
• Criticism and judgment of people "thinking" more slowly than she
• Clarity in communicating details was sometimes less than what was needed.

Overall, she is a great manager and only had these few places to stay aware of in working through this project.

The deal breaker for her??? Each person she would be managing for this $3.5 mil, 6 month project had attained at least an MBA and 5 of the 10 on the team had their Ph.Ds.

My client had not graduated from college. You can see she might have some potential confidence issues here.

Our coaching challenges were as follows:

• Scraping her off the floor and helping her get her confidence back so she could manage herself and the project
• Keeping her judgment in tack and her power position on leading rather than competing
• Managing performance and outcomes rather than the degree the person held

The results of our coaching together:

1. The project came in under budget and she got a surprise bonus.
2. She was offered a plum assignment at the corporate campus for a year with some nice dollars, a new fancy title and a terrific office.
3. The project pleased the client so much that this client gave her organization their business exclusively which amounted to $28 million annually.
4. She learned to respect the highly educated without regard to her own decision to gain experience rather than degrees.
