People Are Impressive

In the last week, I have had the privilege to have conversations with four (4) different individuals who are amazing.  They would not think so, but they are.

Each one of them is handling a personal or professional issue with grace, confidence, and commitment.

With each conversation, I counted my blessings.  You know sometimes we all have such negative self talk going on:

  • I could never do that
  • Everyone is smarter than me
  • Well if I had all the time in the world, I could probably do that too
  • Their talents are natural, so why even bother

Well, I am here to tell you that you are a truly remarkable person.  Whether you think anyone else knows it, I do.  Sometimes just getting up in the morning deserves an award of the highest level.

So cut it out!  You are terrific!  Accept the truth and go out and enjoy your life!

My newly arrived, smelling great from the printing press, gorgeous and crisp, “Roadmap to Success” book is evidence that when you confidently walk through your life, you create great “stuff”.  A year ago I did not think I would be hanging out with Ken Blanchard and Stephen Covey, much less co-authoring a book with them.  Now I am and I love that I get to share this success with you.

Let me ask you two very important questions…

“What if you had a ‘Roadmap’ for your Success?”

“What if no matter what was around the next corner, you had a strategy to create your Success?”

...Now you do!

I would like to invite you to be consistently supported and highly motivated in developing your successes.  And I want to assist you in recognizing and immediately implementing your strengths and talents in leadership, communication and maximizing your performance.

You can do it with this book, “Roadmap to Success”.  As America’s Top Confidence Coach I have the honor and privilege of co-authoring my new book, “Roadmap to Success” with Stephen Covey and Ken Blanchard.

My life has changed because I included them, Stephen and Ken, as part of my roadmap to success design.  I get to step up and use my talents and strengths in a whole new, influential way.  I want you to have the same powerful results.

Included in the book are exceptional strategies and stories of how I learned to be profoundly profitable and successful.  You will learn undeniable success principles as Stephen, Ken and I share our secrets and reveal remarkable insights into designing your Roadmap for setting and achieving your personal and professional goals.

Delivering Difficult Information and Gen Y
By: Natalie Hoffmann, COO and Gen Y Emerging Leader

Many of the Gen Y emerging leaders have a tough time when difficult information is delivered to them.  It’s already tough enough being younger than everyone who are the apparent decision makers.  Then to have them say to us:

  • That’s not right
  • You need to add this
  • The timing on that was not good
  • Maybe you need more training in this

These are the types of the comments that feel like insults to us because we already feel as if we have several strikes against us for being the age we are and living in the time we are living in.  In order for you to understand what I mean by this…insults… just think about the last conversation where you felt as though you were undervalued or dismissed.  For me when I am in this situation I feel frustrated and ineffective.

Now that I have made the commitment to work on my leadership and communication skills I have found several of these judgments and feelings I have had in the past about comments people have made to me are unfounded.  I realize now that my superiors and even my peers who have commented on my training, timing and core skills are really just trying to help me grow as a leader rather than trying to insult me.

I also have a choice of how I feel when I receive information.  I can receive information by thinking that what I am hearing is going to be helpful or not.  When I decide – ahead of time – that the information is going to be helpful, it is.  When I think that it is going to not be a good situation, I am right, it is not.

In order for me to have grown as a leader and a better listener, I’ve needed to find out what I value around wanting to be an extraordinary leader.  I have needed to spend some time with me to determine my goals and aspirations.  It is an interesting process and also helpful.  Finding out that my passions are:

  • Contributing
  • Communicating in a superb way
  • Growing people
  • Being a life long learner

These have helped me to know that the information I get from “them” is really an answer to what I value.
Getting out of my own way has gotten me two big promotions in the last two years, some nice money, a company car and respect from my co-workers who are ALL older than me.

Now, when someone delivers information (difficult or otherwise) to me, I listen for the value of what they are saying.  What is really astounding is that the information that I now receive makes sense and the people who deliver the information are less “duh”.  Sounds like I am growing up.

Linkedin (www.linkedin.com) is a very valuable way to build business relationships.  I want to share with you some of the advantages of the site.

Advantages of Linkedin:

Fill out your profile to make you look good!
This is really a no-brainer, if you want to get full use of Linkedin it has to be a representation of you. It’s a bit like putting together a resume, include everything that is relevant *and* puts you in a positive light and ignore the rest. According to Linkedin , users with complete profiles are 40 times more likely to find opportunities through the site. Linkedin has a neat tool that tells you how complete your profile is and gives suggestions on what else you can do. I recommend filling in just about everything.

Expand Your Network
Networking is only as effective as the network you have, so you need to grow that set of contacts as much as possible.

Invite people
While you don’t want to send out a ton of spam invitations, it’s worth inviting anyone you know reasonably well. The worst that can happen is they’ll ignore your email. I know personally I arrived at Linkedin through an invitation, so why not others!

Look for people you know, already on Linkedin
There are plenty of people you may not feel comfortable inviting, but who you wouldn’t mind reaching out to. Do a search on your school, former places of work, places you’ve lived and any other hooks that might find people you know. Linkedin will also give you a list of people you might know, I honestly have no idea how it works, but it has found some people I never would have thought of, and certainly didn’t think Linkedin knew I knew! Add them all, who knows who will be a useful contact.

Request Introductions
One of the main features of Linkedin is the ability to request introductions through your existing network.

Once you have some contacts, you can explore their connections and request an introduction to anyone really useful.   I personally have had wonderful results with Linkedin (www.linkedin.com) and met many new people I might not have otherwise encountered.  Good luck and let me know how it goes.
