The last six weeks has been filled with travel to clients all over the USA. Business is great! We are out there delivering value for the “what and how” of Leadership and Communication for organizations and their teams, senior managers, and up and coming executive women. Most of the time the travel works really well, but this last weekend it took five plane rides for me to get from Kansas back to Tennessee. Although I can be directionally challenged sometimes, I knew we were in trouble when the third trip on Saturday went to Denver rather than closer to the East Coast.

I was feeling really out of control waiting for planes at various Midwestern airports, however, this feeling helped me brainstorm better ways to take good care of my clients without all the flying. Although we have made many changes to how we deal with travel for 2009, I think we need more refinement. The delays were a terrific time for me to think through what would be valuable and also serve our clients. By the time I got back Sunday night at 7:30pm, it was also important to see what would serve me too.

I DO NOT want to be an airline attendant, host, pilot, steward etc. However, I applaud the people who are. They served me well, kept on smiling and were supportive throughout the whole Midwest weather situation. Many thanks to all those who work in the airline industry. I will pray for your sanity.

Rethinking What Became Obvious

After my weekend flying around the country from East to West when I wanted to go Midwest to East, helped me to rethink what was pretty obvious for me. I am spending hours traveling to my clients and speaking engagements – sometimes triple the hours more than the actual delivery of the content.

My challenge is the NMA business model, which has been so successful and continues to be very successful today in the midst of what is now known as the “turbulent times”.

We offer organizations, teams, and individuals the opportunity to hone their leadership and communication skills in many ways:

We do most of our work in person. You can see with our current business model, and as we grow our organization, I will probably be living on a plane. With the current business model of the airline industry, I will be living on a plane in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Time to do some thinking and changing.

My point (and thanks for taking this all in) is this: “Is your life and business model working?”

Mine is not. We have a great business, terrific clients, a marketing funnel full of prospects, and amazing opportunities for this year and most of what we do will be done in person.

I hate to say this, but thank you to the winter storm that kept me isolated, annoyed and tired because it also gave me time to think through:

“Do I really want to be doing my life and business this way?”

I am asking you the same question? Is what you are doing working well for your business, for your life style, for your health and for your clients?

Watch for changes from NMA.
