Mid-Year
Review of “What is Working?”
By: Natalie R.
Manor, CEO
I can’t think of anything
more stressful than rushing to review your goals and
outcomes through the eyes of “the year is half gone”
and “I am so far behind”. Let’s be a little more gentle
with ourselves, wiser with our time and kinder in our
approach, shall we?
I honestly believe your
mid-year review can fulfill you more than disappoint
you.
June is a great time to
take a look at your numbers, your niche, your projects
and your people. It is also a whale of a good time to
take a look at the reasonableness of the original goals
and dreams you set forth in January, especially if you
planned your year with ideas of how to make things work
that may not have been working for you in years past.
Let me give you an example.
Years ago, I used to feel the huge pressure to get my
goals on paper by January 1st. I would be especially
hard on myself regarding the marketing plan. Then, five
years ago, I became really smart (hear wiser and kinder
to me here) and made March 1st the start of my marketing
year.
Believe it or not, that
was a very lucrative move for myself and NMA because:
- I developed my goals,
outcomes and dreams for the marketing plan on time.
- I was so much more
relaxed while constructing the
plan, I was actually way more creative about the
implementation.
You really need to do
a review of your goals and outcomes mid-year. It is
a good idea. It connects you with your original plans
and goals and allows you to do some course corrections.
Here is what I do not
want you to do:
- Give yourself a hard time for
not finishing it all
- Harshly beat yourself up for anything
- Get you shorts in a bunch over
the small stuff
However, here is what I
do want you to do with your mid-year review:
- Take a good long look at how and
where you are spending your time. Ask yourself,
“Am I choosing how to spend my time or is my schedule
running me?”
- Review your numbers for the year
and see if they are where you want them to be. If
not, what is reasonable for you to feel good about
them in December?
- Are you really enjoying your customers
and clients? If not, stop marketing to them. Find
customers and clients that will give you a sense
of excitement about working with them.
- Take a look at the people you
are working with. Have you taken good care of them
and do you communicate well with them? If not, why
not?
Here are your questions
for your review:
- What is working?
(Make a list so you have evidence. Sometimes it
is hard to believe that we really do produce great
outcomes.)
- What is not
working? (Make a list so you can see what
those things really are.)
- What do you
need to change in order to be wiser, kinder, gentler,
and more profitable with you?
Money is not everything.
Everything is not money. However, money (or the lack
thereof) can make us feel pretty badly if it does not
meet our expectations. So do what is good for you, your
family, your co-workers, your organization, and your
heart. The dollars will come, I promise. I do know for
a fact that yourself satisfaction will definitely come
and sit with you like an old friend.
My 5th book “Roadmap
to Success” is a great read. Go to the
NMA Recommends section of the newsletter below
to learn more. It is a wonderful reminder of what
is possible and a good reminder of how terrific it can
be when we are kind, wise and intentional with our talents
and strengths.
P.S. Let me know if you
would like it autographed. I would be pleased to do
that for you.
