Combining
Business Success with Personal Success
By: Natalie R.

In the past few years there
has been a lot of "noise" around work-life balance. There
are many preconceived ideas that need to be looked at,
including the idea that you have to leave business at
the office in order to have a good family life. In our current
business environment, where the pace is ever increasing
and we are becoming more "all inclusive" by
the minute, you have to ask yourself:
"Is the concept
of leaving your work at work really serving you?"
You might want to leave
the Blackberry in your briefcase so you don’t fuss with
it during dinner. However, the people you live with,
grow with and create your personal/family life with, probably
have some great ideas for you on how you can be more
successful.
Remember, they know you
best.
Some of the best coaching
I have ever received has been from my daughters. And
for some reason, I am blessed with an ego that can be
stymied for a few minutes so I can profoundly listen
to the words of wisdom they have the COURAGE to share
with me.
Over the years many of my
female coaching clients
have shared their stories of guilt for “leaving” their children
as they go off to work.
They use statements,
regarding their work, with their children like these:
“Honey, I have to go to
work.”
“You know I am going to
be late and they will be mad.”
“I know you miss me, but
I HAVE TO GO TO WORK!”
The statements they make
alarm the kids. It is almost as if work is a bad thing
and the kids try to protect them from HAVING to go there.
When I coach women
(and men) around going to work I ask them:
- Do you enjoy your
work?
- Do you find your work
stimulating?
- Do you feel a sense
of accomplishment with your work and contribution?
Most of the time they answer
“yes”.
Well, duh, tell your kids
that. Tell them how stimulating, rewarding, exciting,
frustrating, and challenging your work is and let them
in on the “story” of work. They deserve to know the
good stuff and to hear how very talented you are.
Business and personal lives.
Sometimes they blend well and sometimes they don’t.
However, your language and ideas around what works
best for you might
need some updating.
My clients tell me that
they love working with me because I am available to
them. I have set my business and personal life up this
way because being a resource and a support does not
always happen at 9:00 am or during the normal business
day. I take their call, help them with an issue and
then get back to sitting on my front porch with my puppy
or reading my semi-steamy murder mystery.
Life is good.
What are you telling yourself?
What do you believe? What language or belief do you
need to modify so you can enjoy both aspects of your
life?
We have two new programs
coming up shortly that are going to be just wow. I am
NOT allowed to say anything yet, but I can promise you
that we have put our experience and joy into the development
and KNOW you are going to want to participate big time.
Be
swell. My advice…buy some ice cream and eat it. Pet
your puppy. Hug your friends, family and self.
