Snow
in Tennessee
By: Natalie R.

The weather forecast was
pretty scary for us here in Tennessee this past week.
In fact, the initial forecast of 4-8 inches of snow
had the area buzzing with some very negative thoughts.
Then, the revised forecast for that same (Friday) changed
to 8-12 inches of snow. Fortunately, the kids are out
of school already for the holiday break so the schools
did not have to worry about getting the kids home safely.
Twelve inches of snow in this area of the country is
big snow, scary snow, “oh no” snow.
Here in Eastern Tennessee
we don’t get 8-12 inches of snow. There are only a few
snowplows and even fewer people who have any inclination
of how to drive or operate in this kind of snow.
My New Hampshire roots
kept me pretty calm, even when the snow finally did
start and did stick.
I kept going to the window
to watch the snowfall. It was wonderful. The snow was
coming down thick, continuous, boldly covering every
inch in its path. It was a wet snow, heaping wet weight
to the bushes and trees making them into odd shapes.
Then the news reports started
about horrible auto collisions in the weather – stories
of people speeding and running headlong into each other.
Terrible news of people running off the road and running
out of gas thinking they wouldn’t be affected by the
storm.
After the fourth report
of terrible accidents on the news, I decided that I
was not helping by judging the intelligence of those
who were badly injured or even died because they did
not listen or heed the weather reports.
We are all stupid at times
in our lives. We ignore the obvious as if it does not
apply to us. We know better and then we get ourselves
in to trouble. This time these people actually died
because they didn’t listen to something as simple as
the weather report. There will be 12-inches of snow,
whiteout conditions, blizzard conditions, and you are
advised against any sort of travel until the storm is
over.
This week is our Christmas
holiday. Next week is the end of the year celebration
to bring in the bright shiny New Year. Even with the
promise of these events, people didn’t pay attention
to the obvious.
You cannot drive 80 mph
in blizzard conditions and be safe.
So, let me lovingly share
with you a simple NMA idea for you for this week and
every week, whether it is the biggest holiday of the
year and almost the New Year, or just some normal day
in your life.
There are signs to let
you know if you are safe and moving in the right direction.
Listen to them.
Take the moments you need
in order to examine whether it is safe to move at a
high speed or if the indications are that you need to
proceed with all your wit and wisdom.
Many people in your life
deserve you using your smarts at the right time and
in the right way. Most importantly though, you deserve
the very simple act of thinking through your actions.
If it looks dangerous,
it is.
If it smells like smoke, it is.
If it sounds wrong, it is.
Trust and listen to that
very wise and practical voice inside of you and enjoy
this most precious of holiday weeks. Safely move toward
your dreams at the rate of speed that will allow you
to arrive in style and health.
We here at NMA send you
blessings this holiday to you and yours and the happiest
of New Years.
I am honored to be in your
life.
